The Walk is about 6 miles*, and will take about 3 hours max. Good under foot apart from one very wet/sticky patch, and variably signed. Cattle and horses may be very curious, particularly if you have a dog.
Set off away from the village on the Sheriffs Court, "sheltered bungalows" on your left. Cross footbridge on your right, and head of down the field, with hedge on your left. Emerge to see path alongside hedge to left leading on down hill [ignore obvious path to right AA-coming back that way], follow this path, and swing left with it, passing side of wood, and soon after emerge onto road. Go straight across, and continue down with ditch on right.
At T junction, with stream in front of you, turn sharp left, with stream on right, and soon cross stream on newish foot bridge. Head straight up field, over a stile or two to emerge onto another road. Turn right, and soon bear left at triangle, and take path alongside the road, which brings you to War Memorial in centre of Carlton, bear right. Shortly you reach a grand junction of four pathways : take the tree lined broad path in front of you, and head down hill [wet and messy]. At bottom of hill turn sharp left on main path, and soon reach T junction, with little ford through incipient River Stour.
Turn left, and follow this much drier track as it swings right: when you hit another ford, and a bridge, cross the bridge, and immediately turn sharp right, and follow this path with a wood on your left. Join major track at T junction and turn left. Almost immediately turn right through hedge, and follow path across field and pass between paddocks and barns to emerge onto road.
Turn right, and almost immediately at road junction walk through gap in hedge opposite, cross horse paddock and then walk between paddock fences into Brinkley with Brinkley Hall in front of you. Turn right along road, and very soon turn left along footpath, which leads you back to AA above. Turn left through gap in hedge, head up the field, turn right over footbridge, and back to your car.
Do have a look at buildings around the green as you go to the Bull, the School Buildings on your left have carved figures of C18th scholars above the door.
*Note from webmaster: We measured this walk at 4.6 miles and it took 2 hours
